Calling all diamond lovers! We’ve got some exciting news for you. The largest diamond in North America was recently discovered, and we can’t help but swoon in adoration.
After all, at Southwest Jewelry Buyers, we’re dedicated to learning everything there is about diamonds—and this historic find is no exception.
In October 2018, an egg-sized diamond was discovered in Northern Canada.
According to a press release by Dominion Diamond Mines, a 552-carat yellow diamond was unearthed last October.
It was discovered at the Diavik Diamond Mine in Northwest Territories, a remote province of the Canadian Arctic. The mine is 190 miles northeast of Yellowknife, the capital of Northwest Territories, and 135 miles south of the Arctic Circle.
The diamond is about the size of an egg. It’s also nearly three times larger than the previous record, a 187.7-carat diamond discovered in 2015 in the same mine.
Bloomberg News also determined that the yellow gem is one of the 30 largest stones ever discovered. The biggest, which was unearthed in South Africa in 1905, set a worldwide record of 3,106 carats.
Since the diamond still needs to be cut, its worth is currently unknown.
Shane Durgin, Dominion’s Chief Executive Officer, told Bloomberg in an interview that the diamond is the right quality for jewelry. However, the gem needs to be cut and polished before its final value is determined.
The press release also states that only a few master cutters in the world are qualified to do the job.
